Did you know that walking can have a powerhouse of health benefits?
The American Heart Association says that walking at a brisk pace at least 150 minutes a week can help you:
- Think better, feel better, and sleep better.
- Reduce your risk of serious diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and several types of cancer.
- Improve your blood pressure, blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.
- Increase your energy and stamina.
- Improve your mental and emotional well-being and reduce your risk of depression.
- Improve memory and reduce your risk of dementia.
- Boost bone strength and reduce your risk of osteoporosis.
- Prevent weight gain.
If you haven’t made a habit of walking for at least 150 minutes a week, but want to get started, here are some tips on how:
- If you have a dog, take them on a walk to get your steps in.
- Park a little further away when you go to the store.
- Take stairs rather than elevators.
- Walk on a green way or park trail with a friend.
Creating a habit takes time, so don’t be too hard on yourself if it gets hard to practice this habit! Just keep at it and know that you got this!
