The Benefits of Fluoride

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is found in air, water, soil, plants, and many foods. When consumed at safe levels, fluoride is good for you like many other minerals that are naturally occurring like calcium (found in leafy greens) and halite (table salt).

3 Benefits of Drinking Fluoridated Water:

  1. Fluoride Keeps Teeth Strong
    • When drinking fluoridated water, your teeth are constantly exposed to a consistent, low level of fluoride. This allows for long term benefits which are fewer cavities, tooth fillings, and pulled teeth.
  2. Fluoride Prevents Expensive Dental Treatments
    • One tooth has the ability to develop multiple cavities and each cavity can cost hundreds of dollars to treat. If cavities are left untreated, more serious conditions can occur. When communities have access to water that is fluoridated, people are less likely to leave the dentist’s office with a costly bill.
  3. Fluoride is an Accessible Form of Preventative Health Care
    • Fluoridated water is automatically accessible to the public and does not require a prescription. This benefit is important for people who have limited access to dental care and dental resources.
